The following is a call-out to any who could contribute ideas, contacts, or even material support to an event hoping to bring anarchy and empowerment to the kids of Chicago. Likewise, it's an invitation to anyone in the area who would like to help more directly.
It's time we started some real teenage rebellion instead of having it sold to us from Hot Topic. After some discussions and dropping intriguing hints to our friends, we kids in the Sort Sol Collective have decided on our plan: as an alternative to the massive consumerist, school-chaperoned(-policed) spectacle of alienation and intoxication that is school prom, we'll have a massive anarchist event put together by and for youth, to display the power we have (and what more we should have) over our own lives and extend a hand to our fellow teenagers who don't want to spend another day dying in a classroom in preparation for the same in a storefront or office, who could benefit from the knowledge and support of a community of people who've made it their explicit goal to combat these institutions.
The grand idea: meet fellow rebellious teens, find and discuss radical ideas, display the amazing ability of the anarchist community to provide spaces outside the realm of monotony and capitalism, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, create a lasting, growing network of radical youth and take it to its greatest possible extent.
On that note, we could use some help! We're a bunch of fairly inexperienced highschoolers (and dropouts, and recent graduates) ourselves, so we're mildly lacking in resources, for all we have in spirit and determination. We can handle plenty of this shit, but as the gift economy goes: the more we put it into this, the more everyone will get out of it. More details are a few sentences away, but it should be said outright that advice and experience and ideas should certainly be considered as valuable as material goods, if not more so, considering it would be better to know how to meet our own needs rather than rely on others. All the same, if you're interested in helping out in any form, read on!
WE COULD USE...
* IDEAS - We'd like to have some discussions and skillshares/workshops, for which we could use some suggestions and contributions! This is pretty wide open; we've got some ideas of our own, but any random suggestion could be the epiphany we all missed. This also includes suggestions regarding the entire event, of course. Don't be shy. It's nigh-impossible that you're less experienced than us, which means you should do us a favor and give some advice, especially if you have any past experience with an event like this, whether as an organizer or an attendee.
* PROPAGANDISTS - We want this to go far. Anyone who's in high school, has friends in high school, or could in any way spread the invitation specifically to our fellow kids: you can make this much bigger than we alone ever could.
* MUSIC - Couldn't have a dance without it. Variety is welcomed. If we can get people moshing and slow-dancing in the same night, we'll be unstoppable. Local high school bands and DJs would be awesome, but this isn't a requirement.
* FOOD - People like to eat. Food Not Bombs and People's Kitchen-eers, how do you folks do it? Yes, we know about dumpsters and friendly local businesses, but where should we look? Actual food or ingredients would be immensely helpful, of course.
* LITERATURE - Zines are cool! Especially youth-oriented and DIY stuff, but any inspiring tales or seditious anarchist lit would be a welcome contribution.
* A PLACE? - We're planning on asking a couple of local spaces about hosting the event, but if you want to volunteer the most absolutely perfect possible location to hold a teenage anarchist prom at, by all means, do tell.
* ANYTHING WE FORGOT - "Oh man, how'd they forget _____?! Lemme remind them RIGHT NOW."
